BOMBANANA! Microphone — Who Needs One, and Fixes

Updated 2026-09-07 · Facts verified against official sources

Who needs a microphone

From the official FAQ, near enough word for word: two of the three roles require a microphone. The mute monkey does not, because that role is not allowed to speak.

So a group of three where one person has no headset is still a working group — put them on mute. It is arguably the most demanding role anyway, since they hold the manual.

Voice chat is built in

You do not need Discord running alongside. The game has its own voice chat, and at launch the studio added voice-synced mouth animations — when you talk, your monkey's mouth moves, in the lobby and in game. That is a genuine gameplay signal: the deaf monkey cannot hear you but can see that you are talking.

When the mic stops working

"The microphone isn't working" is an active thread in the official Discord bug-report forum, posted within hours of us checking. It is a known issue, not something you misconfigured.

Worth trying before anything else:

  • Check the game is using the right input device, not the default one Windows switched to
  • Confirm you are on the current build — hotfix v1.0.1 landed the day after launch
  • Have one of the other two confirm whether your monkey's mouth moves when you talk; that separates "mic not captured" from "audio not transmitted"

To be confirmed: whether there is push-to-talk, and where the in-game audio settings live. We have not confirmed either from an official source, and players in the Discord are asking the same question.

If it persists, the studio's own instruction is to post in the Discord bug-report forum.
